Grad and postdoc engagement

  • Alt-Ac: Thinking About Alternative Academic Careers takes place on Tuesday, June 4 at 2 p.m. Andrea Waling, PhD, from La Trobe University in Australia will be facilitating this workshop. Register to secure your spot! 
  • Have you completed your research and are now writing chapters of your thesis? Graduate Writing Boot Camp is for you! From June 18 to 20, you will enjoy a productive, distraction-free work environment and have at least one individual session with a Writing Specialist, which will help you develop the strategies to become a more skillful writer. Learn more and register.
  • Writing an Effective Scientific Research Article: Join Dr. Umair bin Waheed for discussion and practice of effective scientific writing. You will develop expertise in the writing process, readers' expectations and effective revisions. This workshop is an ideal opportunity for participants who are in the process of writing a scientific article. Wednesday, July 31 to Friday, August 2 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. (If you participated in this workshop last year, we recommend only signing up for Thursday and Friday.) Learn more and register.

SGPS updates

  • The Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision recognizes faculty members who have displayed excellence in the mentorship and supervision of graduate students at the university. Any faculty member or student at the university can nominate an individual for the award. This year’s nomination deadline is May 31, 2019.
  • Are you defending your thesis in the Spring/Summer 2019 term? Once you have successfully defended your thesis, you must formally submit a thesis package to SGPS. Thesis formatting, submission procedures, helpful resources, deadlines and conditions can be found in the Graduate Academic Calendar or on the SGPS website.

  • Jackie Brown (Master of Health Sciences student) won the award for best oral presentation from a master's student at the Obesity Canada conference last month. Congratulations Jackie!

UOIT Student Union and Graduate Student Council (GSC)

  • The UOIT Student Union is evolving and we want you to help shape our future! Join us for a focus group to discuss our new name, Orientation Week programming and new services! Focus groups will be held in UL100 on the following dates and times:
    • Thursday, May 16 from 1 to 2 p.m.
    • Wednesday, May 22 from 1 to 2 p.m.
    • Thursday, May 23 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

  • The Office of Student Life has launched our new website! We're constantly working to serve you better, and updating our website to make it easier to navigate is part of that.
  • Student Life's services have moved in order to prepare for the construction of the university’s new Student Centre (to be completed in 2021). Find our temporary locations on the Student Life website

  • Brilliant Solutions, a new work-integrated learning opportunity, is recruiting talented graduate students and postdocs for multi-disciplinary, cross-faculty teams. Those selected will work collaboratively with business leaders to generate concrete solutions to challenging problems faced by some of the largest employers in Durham Region.   • Alumni Night at the Blue JaysYour Alumni Association Council has secured great seats for the July 24 game against the Cleveland Indians. Tickets are $48.50 each for seats in Section 114L, Rows 13 to 23. Bring your friends! Purchase your tickets.
  • Microsoft is offering a free download of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows. Offer expires May 27, 2019. Learn more on the IT Services website.

Money matters

  • From Student Awards and Financial Aid (SAFA): The 2018-2019 OSAP Extension Form is available! If you are an OSAP student taking a minimum of three classes in the Spring/Summer term, complete an OSAP Extension Form. This form is available under the Awards and Financial Aid tab in MyCampus.
