Monthly newsletter from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) with information for UOIT graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

20 of our graduate students representing six faculties are presenting as part of 3MT 2018. Meet our participants
  • UOIT 3MT Heats (schedule available on the 3MT website): Tuesday March 20
    • Heat one: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • Heat two: 1:45 to 3 p.m.
  • UOIT 3MT Finals: Wednesday, March 21 from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • All 3MT events will be held in in the Business and Information Technology Building (UB) Mezzanine on the second floor.

Graduate Student Engagement

  • Grad to Grad workshops: Ready to share your expertise and interests with other graduate students? SGPS invites workshop proposals from current graduate students who would like to organize and/or facilitate a professional development workshop as part of the Grad Pro Skills program. Learn more on our website. Submissions due by March 30.
  • Graduate Professional Skills workshops are held throughout the semester. Build your career skills and enjoy lunch on us! Register on the SGPS website. Upcoming sessions include:
    • Networking Skills (presented by Mitacs) - Tuesday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • No Mind Left Behind: Collaborative Leadership - Thursday, March 29 from noon to 1 p.m.
    • Career Counselling - Monday, April 2 from noon to 1 p.m.
    • Resumés and Cover Letters - Friday, April 6 from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Online Graduate Professional Skills workshops are always available! Topics include work searches, mental health and well-being, lesson planning, mentoring and intercultural competency.

Graduate Student Council

  • Graduate Student Council elections for the 2018-2019 academic year will be taking place soon! An email regarding the online vote will be sent to all graduate students' UOITnet accounts.
  • 9th Annual Graduate Student Research Conference: Due to high interest, the abstract submission deadline has been extended to March 16.

Opportunities

  • Universities Canada is pleased to announce the launch of a new program that supports inclusivity and innovation. The Innovative Designs for Accessibility (IDeA) student competition aims to inspire university students to find innovative, cost-effective and practical solutions to accessibility issues. Competition closes on May 31.
  • $3,000 scholarships are available for graduate students to participate in short research visits to Italy (Polytechnic University of Turin or the University of Salerno). Application deadline is April 6. ICCD Scholarships are funded by the Italian Cultural Centre of Durham.
  • Apply to Education EdTalent is holding the largest education job fair in Canada on Friday, April 20 at Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. Learn more on their website.

UOIT Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision

  • The UOIT Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision recognizes faculty members who have displayed excellence in the mentorship and supervision of graduate students. Nomination forms are now available!

  • The 2018 Spring/Summer OSAP extension form will be available within MyCampus (under the SAFA tab) on April 5.
  • Registration for an OSAP Repayment webinar is available on MyCampus (SAFA tab).
